Recently in Golf Digest

In a recently Golf Digest issue they had an article about integrity. How we mark our own score and even call penalties on ourself. But they wondered if golfers were as honest as everyone thinks. They did a test to determine. They tempted golfers with the possibility of material gain.

The test was fairly simple. They used brand name wedges, worth about $100 each. They attached ID labels to the shaft with a fake name but a real telephone number. They proceeded to discreetly "lose" the clubs green-side at courses through out the country.

If they did not get a call in about one week they called the pro shop to ask if a wedge had been turned in. For their test all of the course were public courses with green fees ranging from $20 to $230.

They left 25 wedges at 25 golf courses in 14 states from California to Florida to New York.

The results they wrote, were inspiring, 21 of the 25 wedges that were "lost" were turned in. Only four wedges never turned up. The conclusion they arrived at was that shaft labels were a good idea.
